"The Migration Profile for Rwandan is a very important exercise and a first in its kind", says Helene Fors, Chief of Mission IOM Rwanda
12 February 2019
Migration related data was usually kept within government institutions. This is no longer the case thanks to the Migration Profile project.
Thanks to the Migration Profile project, led by the Directorate General for Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) with support from IOM Rwanda and in close collaboration with all government institutions, this new profile of Migration in Rwanda will provide a comprehensive analysis of the migration situation in the country.
The exercise streamlines migration data for effective use by policymakers, for the benefit of Rwanda and all migrants.
On 12 February 2019, the Steering Committee (SC), composed of senior management members from different government institutions and IOM, gathered to review the draft Migration Profile and to discuss the way forward of the project.
The key findings and recommendations in the profile were presented by IOM’s national consultant. After the presentation, the floor was open for a Q&A session to allow SC members to ask questions and raise concerns regarding the content of the Migration Profile.
Ms. Helene Fors, Chief of Mission at IOM Rwanda, stressed the importance of the Migration Profile exercise for Rwanda and how it will be a strategic tool for resource mobilization to enable mainstreaming of migration into national policies and programmes in the country.
Technical Working Group (TWG)
Following the steering committee meeting, a technical working group (TWG) workshop was held to finalize and validate the Migration Profile. This took place on 12-13 March 2019.
The validation workshop was followed by a two-day training (14-15 March 2019) on migration management for Rwandan government officials, organized by IOM Rwanda.
This training aimed to promote safe and orderly migration through formulation of relevant national policies, whilst supporting the mainstreaming of migration into the development policy-making process.
